Description

The logical slot configuration of a Tricon chassis enables two approaches for online repair of faulty modules: the hot-spare method and online module replacement.

For the hot-spare method, a single logical slot houses two identical I/O modules. While one module operates in an active state, the other remains powered on but inactive. The Tricon system cycles control between the two healthy I/O modules approximately every hour, ensuring each module undergoes comprehensive diagnostics on a regular schedule. If a fault is detected in one module, the Tricon automatically switches control to the alternate module—allowing the system to maintain three fully functional channels without interruption. The faulty module can then be safely removed and replaced.

Alternatively, online module replacement is still feasible even when only one I/O module is normally installed in a logical slot. In the event of a fault, the Fault indicator illuminates, yet the module continues to operate actively on two channels. A replacement module is then inserted into the unused space within the slot. Once this second I/O module passes a diagnostic test, the Tricon grants it control. After the replacement module becomes active, the faulty module can be removed. This repair method showcases the Tricon controller’s ability to automatically transition from triplicated control to dual control and revert back, all without disrupting the ongoing process.

A Tricon system must include at least one hot-spare module for each type of I/O module present in the system. With this setup, hot-spare modules undergo regular testing and can be deployed for online module replacement at any location within the system.

The following rules apply to the TCM, EICM, NCM, HIM, SMM, and ACM modules in a Tricon system:

A TriStation PC communicates with a Tricon controller via a TCM, EICM, NCM, or ACM. Therefore, at least one of these modules must be installed in either the main chassis or Chassis 2.

One dedicated logical slot is available for EICMs and ACMs respectively. Matched pairs of these modules can be installed in both the left and right positions of a single logical slot.

Up to two logical slots can be configured for NCMs. Matched pairs of NCMs may be installed in the left and right positions of each logical slot. If only one logical slot is used, it can be placed in either the main chassis or Chassis 2. If two logical slots are used, they must be Slots 6 and 7 in the main chassis, and peer-to-peer functionality cannot be enabled.

Up to two logical slots can be configured for TCMs. Matched pairs of TCMs can be installed in the left and right positions of each logical slot, and these slots can be located in either the main chassis or Chassis 2.
