When deployed in a hazardous area, the FGD1, FGD2, and FGD3 detectors demand an intrinsically safe (I.S.) power supply. This power supply can be delivered through two approaches:
Employing proprietary safety barriers.
Utilizing the Status SCM1 Control Unit integrated with the I.S. Output Module (Type: FGDIO).
The FGDIO module can be installed inside the enclosure of the SCM control unit and is capable of providing I.S. outputs for all models in the FGD gas detector product line.
When safety barriers are used to establish an I.S. power supply, specific restrictions apply to the parameters of the interconnecting cables. These parameters are defined by the barrier manufacturer and impose limits on the cable’s maximum capacitance, inductance, and inductance-to-resistance ratio. The installation will only meet the intrinsic safety requirements if the combination of the barrier and connecting cables complies with the manufacturer’s specifications.
Similar to non-I.S. installations, cable length is constrained by the cable loop resistance. With the integration of a barrier or the FGDIO module, the cable loop resistance decreases due to the internal resistance of the barrier. Therefore, when calculating cable lengths, the end-to-end resistance of the barrier must be subtracted from the total cable loop resistance.
Safety barriers must be selected to ensure that the parameters of the I.S. power supply to the gas detectors remain within the following limits:
Gas Detector Type

Umax (V)
Imax (A)
Pin (W)
FGD1/2 (Oxygen or Toxic Gas)

When considering the allowable capacitance and inductance across the barrier’s output terminals:
For any FGD model, the capacitance and inductance between the 0V and SIG terminals are both zero.
For FGD1/2 (flammable gas detectors) and FGD3 (infrared gas detectors), the capacitance between the 0V and PWR terminals is equivalent to 1.4μF, with inductance being zero.
FGDIO Barrier Description
The FGDIO barrier is designed to supply an intrinsically safe power source for powering intrinsically safe equipment installed in hazardous locations.
The power supply input to the barrier is not intrinsically safe. As a result, the barrier must not be placed in a hazardous location unless it is housed in a flameproof enclosure with appropriate certification.
The barrier is equipped with two inputs and two outputs, and its design is specifically optimized for gas detectors requiring a 4-20mA loop power supply. It also provides a higher power output to accommodate pellistor-type and infrared sensors.
