S30361-DN Leakage Current

Leakage current via the PE conductor results from the combination of equipment and cable leakage currents. The leakage current frequency pattern comprises a number of frequencies, whereby the residual-current circuit breakers definitively evaluate the 50Hz current. For this reason, the leakage current cannot be measured using a conventional multimeter.

As a rule of thumb, the following assumptions apply to leakage current for low-capacity cables at a mains voltage of 400 V, depending on the output stage clock frequency:

At 8kHz output stage clock frequency:
At 16kHz output stage clock frequency:

Where:

= leakage current
= number of amplifiers
= length of motor cable

At other mains voltage ratings, the leakage current varies in proportion to the voltage.

Example: 2 servo amplifiers + 25m motor cable at 8kHz clock frequency: leakage current.

Since the leakage current to PE exceeds 3.5 mA, compliance with EN 50178 requires either:

Doubling the PE connection, or
Using a connecting cable with a cross-section >10mm².

Use the PE terminals and PE bolt to meet this requirement.

Measures to minimise leakage currents:

Reduce the length of the motor cable
Use low-capacity cables (see p.53)
Remove external EMC filters (radio-interference suppressors are integrated)

S30361-DN Residual Current Protective Device (RCD)

In conformity with IEC 60364-4-41 (Regulations for Installation) and EN 60204 (Electrical Equipment of Machinery), residual current protective devices (RCDs) may be used if the requisite regulations are complied with.

The SERVOSTAR 300 is a 3-phase system with a B6 bridge. Therefore, RCDs sensitive to all currents must be used to detect any DC fault current. Refer to Chapter 6.10.1 for the rule of thumb for determining leakage current.

S30361-DN Rated Residual Currents for RCDs

10–30 mA: Protection against “indirect contact” (personal fire protection) for stationary and mobile equipment, as well as for “direct contact”.
50–300 mA: Protection against “indirect contact” (personal fire protection) for stationary equipment.

Recommendation: For protection against direct contact (with motor cables shorter than 5 m), each servo amplifier should be individually protected with a 30mA RCD sensitive to all currents.

Using a selective RCD prevents spurious tripping through its more intelligent evaluation process.

S30361-DN Isolating Transformers

When protection against indirect contact is essential despite higher leakage current, or when an alternative shock-hazard protection method is required, the SERVOSTAR 300 can be operated via an isolating transformer (schematic connection see p.58).

A ground-leakage monitor can be used to detect short circuits.
Keep the wiring length between the transformer and servo amplifier as short as possible.
