Description
Charging Unit
The charging unit comprises a charging transformer and both low-voltage and high-voltage relays.
Charging Process
Powered by the auxiliary power supply, the charging unit charges the DC link and phase capacitors. This charging operation occurs before the medium-voltage (MV) switchgear is closed to connect the drive to the main power supply. This pre-charging step eliminates excessive inrush current during the MV supply connection.
To initiate the charging sequence, press the SUPPLY ON pushbutton located on the control compartment door. Once the charging sequence completes, the following actions occur automatically:
- The charging unit is disconnected from the medium-voltage circuit.
- The MV switchgear closes.
- The DC link voltage rises to its nominal level.
Discharging Process
Discharging is triggered by pressing the SUPPLY OFF pushbutton on the control compartment door, which first opens the MV switchgear. Subsequent steps include:
- The DC link capacitors discharge through active modulation.
- The energy stored in the capacitors is dissipated via the clamping resistors in the drive’s power section.
- When the DC link voltage drops below 25% of its nominal value, the capacitors in the phase modules begin discharging.
Stand-by Mode
After the DC link is fully charged, the drive can be maintained in this state to enable faster start-up. Stand-by mode losses are approximately 1% of the nominal power, resulting from minor energy dissipation in the Active Front End (AFE), Inverter Unit (INU), and auxiliary components.
Grounding Safety Procedures
- The grounding switch features an electromechanical interlock with a discharge monitoring circuit. This interlock prevents the switch from closing while the DC link capacitor remains charged.
- Grounding the drive is only permitted afterthe main power supply is disconnected and the DC link is fully discharged. A DC link is considered discharged when its voltage falls below 50 VDC.
- At this voltage level (≤50 VDC), the “GROUND SW RELEASED”pilot light (see Item 1 in Figure 24) on the control compartment door illuminates. This light indicates that the grounding switch can be switched to the grounded (O) position (see Item 2 in Figure 24).
- When the grounding switch is in the grounded position (see Item 2 in Figure 24), use the Kirk® key and the MV compartment door key (triangular-shaped) to open the AFE/INU compartment door.
Special Note for Drives with Integral Input Contactor Disconnect
For detailed instructions on drives equipped with the integral input contactor disconnect option, refer to Appendix P – Integral Input Contactor Disconnect (available on the CD).
A key procedural exception applies to drives with both the integral input contactor disconnect and auxiliary drive transformer options:
- Disconnecting the main power supply is not requiredbefore grounding the drive via the grounding switch.
- The correct procedure is:
- Allow the drive to discharge completely.
- Operate the grounding switch.
- Open the isolation switch
