RET650 ABB Power Supply ORIGINAL

The Transformer differential protection is provided with

internal CT ratio matching, vector group compensation and

settable zero sequence current elimination.

The function can be provided with two or three three-phase

sets of current inputs if enough HW is available. All current

inputs are provided with percentage bias restraint features,

making the IED suitable for two- or three-winding

transformer in multi-breaker station arrangements.

Description

The RET650 delivers fast and selective protection, monitoring, and control functions tailored for two-winding and three-winding transformers, autotransformers, generator-transformer units, and shunt reactors. This IED (Intelligent Electronic Device) is engineered to operate reliably across a broad frequency range, enabling it to adapt to power system frequency fluctuations during disturbances, as well as generator startup and shutdown processes. Notably, it incorporates apparatus control capabilities for up to 3 circuit breakers.
A high-speed differential protection function—equipped with built-in transformer ratio matching and vector group compensation—positions this IED as an ideal solution even for the most demanding applications. Due to the RET650’s minimal requirements on main current transformers (CTs), no interposing CTs are necessary. To prevent incorrect tripping, the differential protection function includes 2nd harmonic and waveform-blocking restraint features (to mitigate magnetizing inrush current) and 5th harmonic restraint (to address overexcitation scenarios).
The differential function offers exceptional sensitivity for low-level internal faults. Leveraging the theory of symmetrical components, the RET650’s unique and innovative sensitive differential protection feature ensures optimal coverage against internal turn-to-turn winding faults. Complementing this, a low-impedance restricted earth-fault protection function serves as a sensitive, fast main protection against winding earth faults, incorporating a directional zero-sequence current criterion to enhance security.
Tripping signals from pressure relief devices, Buchholz relays, and temperature monitoring devices can be integrated via the IED’s binary inputs. These inputs support trip signal conditioning (such as pulsing, lockout, and additional logic configurations) to meet specific operational needs. Furthermore, the binary inputs are highly stabilized against external disturbances, preventing incorrect operations caused by issues like DC system capacitive discharges or DC earth faults.
For backup protection, the IED provides versatile phase, earth, and zero-sequence overcurrent functions with directional capabilities. It also offers thermal overload protection (with two time-constants) and breaker failure protection to enhance system resilience.
A built-in disturbance and event recorder captures valuable data on the IED’s status and operational events, supporting post-fault disturbance analysis for maintenance and troubleshooting.
Two pre-configured packages have been developed to simplify deployment for common applications:
  • Single breaker, 2-winding transformer (Configuration A01)
  • Single breaker, 2/3-winding transformer (Configuration A05)
Each package comes fully configured and ready for direct use. Analog and control circuits are pre-defined, while additional signals can be integrated as needed for specific application scenarios. The pre-configured IED can be further modified and adapted to meet unique requirements using the application configuration tool.
The IED supports both COMTRADE1999 and COMTRADE2013 data formats, which can be selected via the Parameter Setting Tool (PST) in PCM600 or through the Local Human-Machine Interface (LHMI).
Designed for flexibility in modern substations, the IED is compatible with IEC/UCA 61850-9-2LE process bus architectures, supporting up to eight Merging Units (MUs). Each MU is equipped with eight analog channels (four for current, four for voltage). Notably, conventional input transformer modules and MU channels can be freely mixed to suit the application’s needs.
For testing purposes, the ability to force binary inputs and outputs offers a convenient method for verifying substation wiring and validating IED configuration logic. Essentially, all binary inputs and outputs on the IED’s I/O modules (including BOM, BIM, and IOM) can be set to arbitrary values during testing.
To enhance security, the RET650 features Central Account Management—an authentication infrastructure that provides a secure solution for enforcing access control to IEDs and other systems within a substation. This system includes the management of user accounts, roles, and certificates, as well as the distribution of these credentials—all through a process that is completely transparent to the end user.
