For inter-substation communication, RED615 relays utilize either a fiber optic link or a galvanic pilot wire connection. As a member of ABB’s Relion® product family, the RED615 also belongs to the company’s 615 protection and control product series. A defining feature of the 615 series relays is their compact structure paired with a withdrawable-unit design. Fully reengineered from the ground up, the 615 series adheres to the IEC 61850 standard—a benchmark for communication and interoperability in substation automation equipment.
Functionally, the relay delivers unit-type main protection for overhead lines and cable feeders in distribution networks. It also integrates current-based protection functions, which serve as remote backup for downstream protection relays and local backup for the line differential main protection. Notably, the standard configurations D and E of the RED615 include directional overcurrent protection and voltage-based protection functions.
The relay is adaptable to protect overhead lines and cable feeders across diverse neutral grounding systems, including isolated neutral, resistance-grounded, compensated (impedance-grounded), and solidly grounded networks. A key advantage is its operational readiness: once configured with application-specific settings, the relay can be directly commissioned into service.
In terms of communication capabilities, the 615 series relays support a broad range of protocols. This includes IEC 61850 (with support for Edition 2), the process bus as specified in IEC 61850-9-2 LE, as well as Modbus® and DNP3.
