MVME712M I/O Transition Module

The MVME712M is an I/O transition module designed for Motorola’s families of processor modules, including MPU VMEmodules, VME Processor Modules, Embedded Controllers, and Single-Board Computers (SBCs)—collectively referred to as “MVMExxxx” throughout this documentation. Its core function is to act as an interface between MVMExxxx processor modules and their peripheral devices, with a primary goal of providing rear-panel industry-standard connectors to simplify customers’ external cabling requirements.

Core Working Principle

The MVME712M relies on a  (supplied) P2 adapter board and cables for interconnection with MVMExxxx processor modules. The P2 adapter assembly serves as a signal routing hub: it extracts I/O signals and ground connections from the P2 connector on the VME chassis backplane (where the MVMExxxx module connects) and transmits these signals to the MVME712M. The MVME712M then distributes these signals to dedicated front-panel ports (e.g., serial, Ethernet, SCSI) for easy peripheral access.

Key Features of the MVME712M

The MVME712M integrates multiple connectivity and protection features to support diverse peripheral needs, including:
  • Four EIA-232-D Serial PortsImplemented with industry-standard DB-25 connectors on the front panel (signal routing via the P2 adapter). Each port can be configured for either EIA-232-D DTE (Data Terminal Equipment) or DCE (Data Circuit-terminating Equipment) mode using jumpers on the MVME712M.

    • Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) protection on the front panel: Reduces electromagnetic interference to ensure stable signal transmission.
    • Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) protection on the front panel: Prevents damage from static electricity during handling or operation.
