The MVME55006E-0161R is a high-performance single-board computer (SBC) built for robust industrial, defense, and aerospace applications. It integrates a powerful processor, flexible memory, and versatile I/O to support demanding VMEbus-based systems.
This document provides an overview of the MVME55006E-0161R, its key features, configurable operating modes, and step-by-step procedures for hardware setup and PMCspan module assembly.
1. Introduction to the MVME55006E-0161R
The MVME55006E-0161R is a high-performance single-board computer (SBC) built for robust industrial, defense, and aerospace applications. It integrates a powerful processor, flexible memory, and versatile I/O to support demanding VMEbus-based systems.
The MVME5500 supports two distinct I/O modes, configurable via on-board jumpers. Both modes maintain backward compatibility with legacy MVME5100 systems.
Mode 1: SBC Mode (761 or IPMC Mode)
Purpose: Enables integrated I/O via dedicated PMC modules and transition hardware.
Required Components:
IPMC712 I/O PMC + MVME712M transition module; or
IPMC761 I/O PMC + MVME761 transition module.
Key Compatibility: Works with the MVME761 transition module and P2 adapter card (excludes PMC I/O routing) used in MVME5100 systems.
Configuration Steps: Set on-board jumpers + install an IPMC761 PMC in PMC Slot 1. Secondary Ethernet is routed to the rear.
Mode 2: PMC Mode
Purpose: Optimizes direct use of PMC modules (no additional transition hardware required).
Compatibility: Fully backward compatible with MVME5100 systems.
Configuration Steps: Set on-board jumpers (no additional PMC modules required for mode activation).
2. Configuring the Hardware
Before installing the MVME5500 in a chassis, you may need to perform hardware modifications or verify settings to ensure proper operation.
2.1 Configuration Methods
Most MVME5500 options are software-configurable (changes made by setting bits in control registers after the board is installed). A small set of critical options rely on jumpers/switches (for non-software-configurable settings, e.g., mode selection).
Note: If modifying jumper/switch settings from their defaults, double-check all positions to avoid misconfiguration.
2.2 Prerequisite
Before starting the procedure below, read the user’s manual provided with the PMCspan module. Ensure all selected PMC modules are installed on the PMCspan per the instructions in the PMCspan and PMC manuals.
3. Procedure: Assembling PMCspan Modules with the MVME5500
This procedure outlines how to attach PMCspanx6E-010 to PMCspanx6E-002 (primary PCI expansion module) for use with the MVME5500.
Step 1: ESD Protection Setup
Attach an ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) strap to your wrist.
Connect the other end of the ESD strap to a valid electrical ground (note: an unplugged system chassis may not be grounded).
Keep the ESD strap secured to your wrist and ground throughout the entire procedure to prevent component damage.
Step 2: System Power Down & Access Preparation
Perform a full operating system shutdown (do not force power off).
Turn off AC/DC power to the system and disconnect the AC cord or DC power lines.
Remove the system chassis cover(s) to access the VME module slots.
Step 3: Remove the MVME5500-Primary PMC Carrier Assembly
If the Primary PMC Carrier Module (PMCspanx6E-002) and MVME5500 are already installed in the VME chassis, carefully remove the assembly (refer to Figure 1-17 in the original manual for guidance).
Place the assembly on a static-free surface with connectors P1 and P2 facing you.
Step 4: Detach Screws from the Primary PMC Expansion Module
Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the four screws from the standoffs at each corner of the primary PCI expansion module (PMCspanx6E-002). Set the screws aside for later use.
Step 5: Install Standoffs on PMCspanx6E-002
Take the four standoffs from the PMCspanx6E-010 mounting kit.
Screw the threaded male portion of each standoff into the holes where the screws were removed in Step 4 (ensure standoffs are tightened securely).
Step 6: Align PMCspanx6E-010 with PMCspanx6E-002
Place PMCspanx6E-010 on top of PMCspanx6E-002.
Align:
The mounting holes at each corner of PMCspanx6E-010 with the standoffs on PMCspanx6E-002.
Connector P3 (on PMCspanx6E-010) with Connector J3 (on PMCspanx6E-002).
Step 7: Seat the PMCspan Modules
Gently press the two PMCspan modules together until Connector P3 is fully seated in Connector J3 (verify no gaps remain between the modules).
Step 8: Secure the Modules with Screws
Take the four Phillips screws removed in Step 4. Note: The screws have two different head diameters.
Insert the screws through the corner holes of PMCspanx6E-010 and into the standoffs on PMCspanx6E-002.
Critical: Use screws with the smaller heads for the standoffs adjacent to VMEbus connectors P1 and P2.
Tighten all screws securely (do not over-tighten to avoid damaging the modules).
