MVME147-013 MOTOROLA Single Board Computer ORIGINAL

The MVME712 modules provide the interface between the
MVME147 and peripheral devices. They connect the MVME147 to
EIA-232-D serial devices, Centronics-compatible parallel devices,
SCSI devices, and Ethernet devices. The MVME712 is cabled to the
MVME147 through the P2 adapter board.

Description

Installation Procedure for the MVME147-013 Module

After configuring the MVME147-013’s headers and installing the selected ROMs in their respective sockets (as outlined earlier), follow these steps to install the MVME147-013 module into the system:
  1. Turn off the power to all equipment and disconnect the power cable from the AC power source.
CautionConnecting modules while power is applied may result in damage to components on the module.
WarningDangerous voltages—capable of causing death—are present in this equipment. Exercise extreme caution when handling, testing, or adjusting the equipment.
  2. Remove the chassis cover in accordance with the instructions provided in the equipment’s user manual.
  3. NoteEvery MVME147-013 is assigned a unique Ethernet station address, formatted as $08003E2xxxxx. Here, “xxxxx” represents the unique number assigned to the module—each MVME147-013 has a distinct “xxxxx” value.
    • The Ethernet station address is displayed on a label attached to the MVME147-013’s backplane connector (P2).
    • Additionally, the “xxxxx” portion of the address is stored in the BBRAM (Battery-Backed RAM) at location $FFFE0778 as $2xxxxx.
Remove the filler panels from the appropriate card slot(s) at both the front and rear of the chassis (if the chassis is equipped with a rear card cage).
      • If the MVME147-013 is configured as the system controller, install it in the left-most card slot (Slot 1) to ensure proper initiation of the bus grant daisy-chain.
      • The MVME147-013 must be installed in the front of the chassis; the MVME712 transition module may be installed in either the front or rear of the chassis.
    Note
    • If Motorola networking software is running on the MVME147-013, it uses the $2xxxxx value from BBRAM to complete the full Ethernet station address ($08003E2xxxxx). Ensure this $2xxxxx value is maintained in BBRAM. If the value is lost, use the number on the P2 backplane connector label to restore it. The MVME147-013Bug utility includes the “LSAD” command for examining and updating the “xxxxx” value in BBRAM.
    • If non-Motorola networking software is used, the software must configure the 79C90 chip to use the Ethernet station address shown on the front panel label. This ensures the module has a globally unique Ethernet address.
  4. Insert the MVME147-013 into the selected card slot. Verify that the module is fully and properly seated in the backplane connectors. Secure the module to the chassis using the provided screws.
    • For optimal operation, a 32-bit VMEbus backplane is recommended. This ensures power is distributed sufficiently across the required power pins on connectors P1 and P2.
  5. If applicable, remove the IACK (Interrupt Acknowledge) and BG (Bus Grant) jumpers from the header on the chassis backplane for the card slot where the MVME147-013 is installed.
  6. Refer to the MVME712 user’s manual (provided with the MVME712 transition module) and install the transition board, P2 adapter board, and any necessary peripheral cables in accordance with the instructions in that manual.
  7. Connect the terminal designated as the system console to the serial I/O port labeled SERIAL PORT 1/CONSOLE on the MVME712 module. To use 147Bug, configure the terminal with the following settings:
    • 8 bits per character
    • 1 stop bit per character
    • Parity disabled (no parity)
    • 9600 baud (matches the MVME147-013 ports’ default baud rate at power-up)
    • After power-up, the baud rate of PORT 1 can be reconfigured using the “Port Format (PF)” command in the 147Bug debugger.
NoteFor high-baud-rate serial communication between 147Bug and the terminal to function correctly, the terminal must support handshaking. If the terminal does not support hardware handshaking via the CTS (Clear to Send) line, it must use XON/XOFF (software) handshaking. If garbled messages or missing characters occur, verify that XON/XOFF handshaking is enabled on the terminal.
  8. If you need to connect devices (e.g., a host computer system or a serial printer) to the serial ports on the MVME712/MVME712M:
    • Connect the appropriate cables as described in the MVME712 user’s manual.
    • Configure the ports as detailed in the “Port Numbers” section of Appendix B in this manual (Debugger General Information).
    • After power-up, these ports can be reconfigured using the “PF” command in the 147Bug debugger.
  9. Turn on the power to the equipment.
