Description

9907-173 Woodward Power Requirements & Shielded Wiring Guidelines

  1. 9907-173 Woodward Power Requirements

The Load Sharing Module is powered via potential transformer connections.

Jumpers are used to configure the module for the generator’s output voltage:

For 95–130 Vac generator output: Jumper terminals 15–16 and 17–18

For 190–260 Vac generator output: Jumper terminal 16–17

Potential transformer burden specifications:

1.6 W per phase (with 230 Vac input)

0.4 W per phase (with 115 Vac input)

  1. 9907-173 Woodward Shielded Wiring

2.1 General Requirements

All shielded cables must use twisted conductors with either foil or braided shielding.

Do not tin (solder) the braided shield.

All signal lines require shielding to prevent interference from stray signals generated by adjacent equipment.

Connect shields to the terminals specified in the plant wiring diagram.

Keep exposed wire beyond the shield as short as possible.

Leave the opposite end of the shields open and insulated from all other conductors.

Do not route shielded signal wires alongside cables carrying large currents.

For additional guidance, refer to Application Note 50532: EMI Control for Electronic Governing Systems.

2.2 Cable Preparation Steps

Strip outer insulation from both ends of the cable to expose the braided or spiral-wrapped shield. Do not cut the shield on the end nearest to the Load Sharing Module; cut off the shield on the end away from the unit.

Use a sharp, pointed tool to carefully spread the strands of the shield.

Pull the inner conductors out of the shield. Twist braided shields to prevent fraying.

Attach lugs to the shield and control wires. Number 6 slotted or round crimp-on terminals are recommended for most installations.

Connect the wires to the appropriate terminals on the module.

2.3 EMI Protection (Severe Environments)

Installations exposed to severe electromagnetic interference (EMI) may require additional precautions, such as:

Shielded wire routed through conduit

Double-shielded wire

Other application-specific EMI mitigation measures
