Installation & Configuration Guidelines
-
Location Considerations
When selecting the mounting location, adhere to the following requirements:
Ensure adequate ventilation for cooling
Reserve sufficient space for servicing and repair
Protect from direct exposure to water or condensation-prone environments
Shield from high-voltage/high-current devices or equipment generating electromagnetic interference
Avoid locations with excessive vibration
Maintain an operating temperature range of –40 to +85 °C (–40 to +185 °F)
WARNING: The control must NOT be mounted on the engine.

Shielded Wiring
2.1 General Requirements
All shielded cables must use twisted conductor pairs
Do not tin (solder) the braided shield
All signal lines require shielding to prevent stray signal interference from adjacent equipment
Connect shields to control terminals as illustrated in Figure 2-1 and the Plant Wiring Diagram (Figure 1-4)
Keep exposed wire beyond the shield as short as possible (maximum 50 mm / 2 inches)
Leave the opposite end of the shield open and insulated from all other conductors
Do not route shielded signal wires with cables carrying large currents
For additional information, refer to Woodward application note 50532: Interference Control in Electronic Governing Systems
2.2 Cable Preparation Steps (for shielded cables)
Strip outer insulation from BOTH ends to expose the braided or spiral-wrapped shield (DO NOT CUT THE SHIELD)
Use a sharp, pointed tool to carefully spread the shield strands
Pull inner conductor(s) out of the shield; twist braided shields to prevent fraying
Remove 6 mm (1/4 inch) of insulation from the inner conductor(s)
Connect wiring and shield as shown in the relevant diagrams

Setting Speed Range
3.1 Selection Criteria
Determine the maximum desired prime mover speed
Calculate the speed sensor signal frequency at maximum speed using the formula:
Frequency (Hz) = (Gear speed in RPM × Number of teeth on speed sensing gear) ÷ 60
Select the lowest speed range that accommodates this maximum frequency
For installations with severe electromagnetic interference (EMI):
Use shielded wire in conduit, double-shielded wire, or other appropriate precautions
Contact Woodward for additional guidance
3.2 Important Notes
Factory-set speed range: 2000 Hz to 6000 Hz
Refer to the “Speed Ranges” section for instructions to modify the speed range (critical for preventing overspeed)
