Description
Woodward 9905-792 Governor Operational Procedure
Applicable Systems: Steam Turbines / Gas Compressors (ISO 10438 API Oil Systems)
Pre-Operational Checks
-
Hydraulic Fluid Verification
- Use ISO VG 32 turbine oil (MIL-PRF-6083 compliant)
- Oil cleanliness: NAS Class 7 max (β₅≥200)
- Reservoir level: Maintain between ¾ sight glass
-
Linkage Setup
plaintextCopy Code• Lever ratio: 2:1 (bellcrank to servo)
• Neutral position:
- Servo piston midway @ 50% stroke
- Compensation needle valve 1.5 turns open
• Friction torque: ≤0.15 Nm (validate with spring gauge)
Startup Sequence
Step 1: Priming
1. Open bypass valve V-72 (counter-clockwise 8 turns)
2. Engage manual startup knob: Pull-rotate 90° CCW
3. Observe oil pressure:
- Minimum 1.4 bar (20 psi) at 500 RPM
- Operating 2.8-3.5 bar (40-50 psi)
4. Close bypass when RPM exceeds 15% of rated speed
Step 2: Synchronization
| Control | Adjustment Range | Calibration Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Speed Droop | 3-5% | 42 RPM/V @ 3600 RPM |
| Compensation | 0.8-1.2 sec | Dashpot oil viscosity 70 cSt |
| Speeder Spring | 10% RPM/turn | Scale mark “7” = 105% overspeed |
Dynamic Calibration
Procedure:
1. Stabilize at 80% load:
• Record natural frequency: Typical 2.1-2.4 Hz
2. Step load change test (25% → 75%):
- Settling time: ≤4 sec (per API 612 Chap. 4.9)
- Maximum overshoot: ±1.5% of setpoint
3. Compensation tuning:
a. Close needle valve clockwise until hunting occurs
b. Open ¼ turn counter-clockwise
c. Verify stability under 100% load rejection
Critical Adjustments
Stability Tuning Limits
| Parameter | Min | Max | Tool |
|---|---|---|---|
| Droop setting | 3% | 8% | Hex key 3/16″ |
| Compensation rate | 0.5 sec | 4.0 sec | Flat screwdriver #2 |
| Speeder preload | 5% | 15% | Torque wrench 6 lb-in |
Prohibited Actions
- Never operate with 9907-238 booster disconnected
- Avoid continuous operation below 20% load
- Do not exceed 115% overspeed trip setting
Troubleshooting Matrix
| Symptom | Probable Cause | Corrective Action |
|---|---|---|
| Hunting (±5% RPM) | Air entrainment / Low oil level | Deaerate via vent plug P-88 |
| Slow response (>8sec) | Worn servo piston ring | Replace seal kit SK-9905-72 |
| Speed drift (1-2%/hr) | Compensation leak | Test dashpot O-ring (PN 10-1784) |
Shutdown & Lockout
-
Normal Shutdown
plaintextCopy Codea. Reduce load to minimum
b. Engage manual knob (CW rotation)
c. Close isolation valve V-15
d. Drain oil at plug D-9 if ambient <0°C
-
Emergency Lockout
plaintextCopy Code[Mechanical Locking Procedure]
1. Install safety pin through hole L-86
2. Apply padlock (Shield PK-7900)
3. Tag-out per OSHA 1910.147
